Instructional League - 4 to 5 years old
Training sessions will consist of multiple skill stations staffed by coaches and parent volunteers. These stations will

have activities that will teach important fundamental soccer skills, such as dribbling, passing, shooting, receiving, etc. These activities will also help develop the kid’s basic motor skills. We hope to have 8 to 10 kids per station and rotate them every 15 minutes. We will also have handouts of the activities to help illustrate and explain the activities to the parent volunteers. The parents will staff the same station for the entire training session, so they will only need to be concerned with teaching one basic activity for the night.
On Saturdays, we will have soccer games for the Instructional League also at Newton Park. These games will start promptly at 9:30 a.m. and last approximately 60 minutes. We will split the kids into 6 to 8 teams. The kids will play soccer in a 3 v 3 format with no goal keeper. Every 10 to 15 minutes we will then have the teams rotate, so the kids have an opportunity to interact with a new group of kids. The purpose of the games is first and foremost to have fun. In addition to having fun, we hope the kids get a healthy dose of exercise and learn the basic game of soccer. But at the end of the day, we are really just hoping that the kids have fun as well as the parents, relatives, and friends that come out to watch the games. Because our
focus is on having fun, we do not keep score of these games, nor care who wins or loses.

The DD League differs from Instructional in that the kids are put on a team that lasts for the entire season. Each team has a coach (or two) that will work with the players in expanding their knowledge of soccer and building on their soccer fundamentals.
On Saturdays, we will have soccer games for the DD League also at Newton Park. These games will start promptly at 11:00 a.m. and last approximately 60 minutes. The format is to have four 10 minute quarters with a five minute half-time. The kids will play soccer in a 6 v 6 format which includes a goal keeper. These games follow most of the basic rules of soccer that they will be playing when the kids progress into the travel teams (age’s eight through fourteen, played in Greater Akron Amateur Soccer Association or GAASA.) They will have throw-ins, corner kicks, goal kicks, etc. just as they will in the travel leagues. There is also a referee assigned to these games (usually a player from some of our older GAASA teams or even the High School.) While the referee is there to control the game, he or she is also instructed to help the kids learn the game. So you may see a referee allow a player to throw in a ball a couple of times so they can get it right. Again, we don't feel the scores of these games or which teams win or lose to be very important. It is only important that the kids have fun, learn an appreciation for the game of soccer and that we, as a community, get an opportunity to encourage children of all skill levels while they play a game.
While we have been fortunate the past few seasons with nice weather for the most part, just a reminder that we do play in most inclement weather situations with the exception of if there is lightening in the area.
